Gambling Superstition And Myths

Help Or Harm?

Superstition and myth are part and parcel for gambling. Superstition is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation." One definition of myth is "a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around something or someone." Could that something be superstition? So what we're left with is a whopping good tale based on some minute kernel of truth, no matter how convoluted the kernel becomes in the twisted path from fact to superstition to myth. Gambling supplies the perfect venue for the intersection of superstition and mythology.

Avoiding black cats and cracks on sidewalks are minor league superstitions when compared to some of those associated with gambling. Some are run-of-the-mill, and some are hilarious, and what's the harm anyway? The only harm comes from allowing superstition to supercede discipline in gambling. Unless gambling is a pure form of entertainment for you, you'll avoid the ones that can actually affect the outcome of your gambling and stick the simple ones like wearing your lucky shirt! Just don't wear it too many days in a row!

Harmless Gambling Superstition

· Wear a lucky piece of clothing, or Carry a lucky omen on your person. (Voodoo doll, anyone?)

· Dropping a card during a game is bad luck (or good luck).

· Always (or never) enter and leave a casino through the same door.

· Singing is good luck (or bad luck) while you gamble.

· Blow on the dice before rolling.

· The color black is synonymous with bad luck. (So wear red!)

· Lucky in gambling, unlucky in life or lucky in gambling, lucky in love, or lucky in gambling, lucky in life, or lucky in gambling, unlucky in love.

Ridiculous Gambling Superstition

· A casino is unlucky, because you have heard that a number of people of committed suicide there after losing their life's savings. The suicides probably never happened, but if they did, that will affect your chances of win how?

· Play with someone else's money to win (or lose). (This might prove dangerous if you lose!)

· Sitting in a lucky chair.

· Always trust your feelings. (This destroys discipline, but the "feelings" people will quickly point out, "what if that one time, your gut is right?)

· Pouring Holy water into a coin slot in a machine.

Have you noticed that most of the superstitions are stated two ways: one in the affirmative, and one in the negative? Do this to win; no, don't do this to win! Who's right? You decide. Better yet, create your own brand new superstition, tell a few people, and see how long it takes before your own superstition makes its way to the Internet and into the Gambling Folklore Hall of Fame.
